One of the key activities of the ECCB committee is the organization of events to promote science and research in the realm of chemical bonding theory. In particular, the European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (ESCB), an international conference series that started in 2016 with the organization of the 1st European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (ESCB1) hosted by the University of Rouen (France). The second edition of the European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (ESCB2) was organized by the University of Oviedo (Spain) in 2018.
The third edition was postoponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the ESCB3 was organized online by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands). This year, the 4th European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (ESCB4) will be held in person at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
These gatherings serve as crucial platforms for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among researchers, fostering a vibrant scientific community.

The primary objective of ESCB symposia is the exchange of the latest developments and ideas in the field of chemical bonding.
The first edition of the ESCB (ESCB1) was organized in the heart of the historical city center of Rouen (France) by Vincent Tognetti, Laurent Joubert (Normandy Univ.) and Benoît Braïda (Sorbonne Univ., Paris) from August 28 to September 2, 2016. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Lewis model, the idea was to bring together theoretical chemists developing various theories and methods to explore the intimate nature of chemical bonds. Bringing together nearly 70 researchers, mainly European, the conference allowed for fruitful exchanges around more than 60 oral or poster contributions.
Practical sessions presenting different software and techniques for chemical bond analysis (mainly around VB theory and QTAIM and ELF topological analyses) were also offered during the weekend before the conference at the Mont-Saint-Aignan University.

The second edition of the European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (ESCB2) was held from 2 to 7 September 2018 at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones Ciudad de Oviedo, in Asturias (Spain). Organised by the Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Group of the University of Oviedo, the event was attended by 102 delegates, including 31 students from the school.
The ESCB2 conference was dedicated to the presentation of new methodological developments as well as relevant applications in the field of chemical bonding, the central core of chemistry. Plenary and invited lectures were given by leaders in the field from all continents, of recognised prestige in international forums, allowing the rich exchange of knowledge as well as the consolidation and/or establishment of collaborations. In addition, oral and poster presentations have been made, presenting the work of a large part of the world community dedicated to the field of chemical bonding. In addition, in our attempt to promote young researchers in the field, the 10 best abstracts were selected and given the opportunity to present their work orally.
Following the tradition inaugurated during ESCB1, the symposium also included a practical school on methods, applications and computational techniques on quantum chemical topology applied to chemical bonding, which shows the interest of the community in knowledge transfer among the younger ones.

The 3rd European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (CBOND2022 Amsterdam online) took place online from 20 to 22 September 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Célia Fonseca Guerra, Trevor A. Hamlin and Matthias Bickelhaupt were in charge of the organization of the virtual symposium. The conference, hosted as a Zoom webinar, was an enormous success based on the participation rate and participants reactions.
The primary objective of CBOND2022 Amsterdam online was the exchange of the latest developments and ideas in the field of chemical bonding. The program extends over three days, and comprises two sessions with lectures by four Distinguished Speakers from USA, Europe, and Australia: Anastassia Alexandrova, Fernando Cossío, Gernot Frenking, and Michelle Coote. Furthermore, an exciting all-day Twitter poster event took place on day 2 (#CBOND2022poster), which included a lively exchange between presenters and attendees. There was simply outstanding science and an excellent atmosphere.
We had 600+ registered attendees, of which around 200 showed up, with a maximum presence during sessions of 150 participants. Registrations came for 38% from Europe, including Israel, and for 62% from the rest of the world. Besides the discussions within the webinar, there has been an enormous impact via Twitter: 200+ Mentions, 600+ Interactions, and 160.000 Reach.

The 4th European Symposium on Chemical Bonding (CBOND2024) took place from 24–27 September 2024 at the O|2 Building on the campus of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The symposium was organized by F. Matthias Bickelhaupt (Chair), Célia Fonseca Guerra (Chair), Trevor A. Hamlin (Vice-Chair), Pascal Vermeeren (Vice-Chair), Lucas de Azevedo Santos, Daniela Rodrigues Silva, and Celine Nieuwland.
The primary objective of CBOND2024 was to facilitate the exchange of the latest developments and ideas in the field of chemical bonding. The four-day symposium featured keynote, invited, and contributed talks by 49 speakers from around the world, along with a vibrant poster session showcasing 44 posters and awarding four poster prizes. We celebrated the fantastic atmosphere and insightful scientific discussions with a delightful dinner cruise along the charming canals of Amsterdam.
CBOND2024 welcomed 120 participants from 25 countries. Registrations came 77% from Europe (including Israel), 8% from South America, 8% from Asia, 6% from North America, and 1% from Africa.
